VeeFriends has pursued one style of ecosystem growth while Blockstream researchers delivered a concrete technical step for Bitcoin with the SHRINCS BIP.

CoinDesk reports that Blockstream researchers Jonas Nick and Mikhail Kudinov published a SHRINCS proposal on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, a hash-based way to sign bitcoin transactions that is designed to stay usable if quantum computers eventually break today’s elliptic-curve signatures. Nick called it the first concrete post-quantum signature proposal designed specifically for Bitcoin and said it is not intended to be Bitcoin’s final signature system. This is a published BIP, not a live mainnet upgrade, and not Ethereum’s used deposit-contract draft.

Signature Size and Throughput Numbers

The scheme starts at about 324 bytes per signature against the 64-byte Schnorr baseline. One 580-byte configuration keeps roughly 3 transactions per second compared with about 6.5 under Schnorr and about 0.36 under NIST SLH-DSA. The construction rests on SHA-256. A formal security proof is still pending. Reference software exists for testing but carries an explicit note that it is not production-ready and has not received a formal security audit.

Sidechain Test Record

Production testing has run on the Liquid sidechain since March 2026. The BIP itself does not alter Bitcoin mainnet. Any future activation would require a soft fork and broad network agreement. The proposal stays distinct from other post-quantum work that targets different chains or contract structures.

Market Snapshot on Publication Day

On the same Thursday, CoinGecko showed BTC at $80,490, up 3.1 percent. ETH printed $2,526.70, also up 3.1 percent. XRP reached $1.47 for a 7.0 percent gain. SOL advanced to $107.71 with a 12.4 percent move. DOGE sat at $0.089228 after a 6.0 percent rise. These candles reflect spot pricing across majors and alts during the hours the BIP appeared.

Leadership of the Move

The numbers that stand out are the byte size and the TPS comparison. The 324-byte signature and the 3 TPS figure give operators a clear trade-off to measure against current Schnorr performance. The Liquid sidechain test since March supplies the only production data point available so far. No mainnet TPS impact is stated because the change remains a draft.

Path Ahead

Mainnet use would still need the soft-fork process and network-wide consensus. The BIP supplies exact algorithms and an executable reference implementation, turning an earlier idea into something implementers can examine. The proposal keeps Bitcoin as the asset and does not claim to solve every post-quantum question at once.
